Continuing Professional Development
Evolving Role of People Professionals
People professionals have evolved from performing traditional administrative functions to taking on strategic and influential organisational roles. Previously, HR professionals mainly handled administrative tasks, such as payroll, compliance, and maintaining employee records. This operational focus was critical but primarily limited in scope (CIPD, 2024a).
In contrast, today, people professionals have a strategic contribution to make towards enhancing organisational performance. In other words, HR professionals now act as strategic partners by aligning HR strategies with broader business objectives. This shift enables them to play a significant role in areas such as talent management, employee engagement, and nurturing organisational culture
The advent of digital technologies and data analytics has transformed the role of HR professionals. Now, they must utilize data analytics tools to make informed decisions, evaluate HR interventions, and measure their impact on business outcomes. Being proficient with these tools enables them to interpret complex data and guide strategic decisions effectively.
Moreover, the increased prevalence of remote work has introduced new dimensions to the role. Management of virtual teams and effective engagement of remote workers have become intrinsic parts of the role, requiring the development of new skills and approaches (CIPD, 2024d).

Implications for CPD
The change in people’s professional lives is not without consequences for Continuous Professional Development. As the emphasis on strategic and data-driven HR increases, attention will need to be focused on the core skills and behaviors described within the CIPD Professional Map.
Those key competencies would include influencing others, data skills, and business acumen. Strong influencing skills are critical for organisational change and alignment of the human resources strategies to accomplish business objectives. Additionally, advanced data skills are necessary to interpret HR metrics, make data-driven decisions, and improve overall organisational performance.
These are areas in which I will focus on my CPD plan—activities that enhance these competencies: getting enrolled in training programs related to data analytics and strategic business skills, workshops on influencing and negotiation, and finding mentors who will guide me on strategic thinking capabilities. This will adequately position and prepare me for the requirements of the changing HR landscape and enable me to contribute more effectively towards the growth of my organisation (CIPD, 2024b).
